Vanir is one of Denmark\u2019s most prominent melodic death metal bands and have, since the band\u2019s
\ninception, released six full length albums. And now, they\u2019re ready to unleash their seventh beast,
\ntitled \u201cEpitome\u201d.
\nThe theme of this new opus is the Danish middle-ages, with two songs branching into the
\nrenaissance (\u201cWood Iron And Will\u201d and the early middle-age \u201cBlood Eagle\u201d). The core of the
\nalbum\u2019s theme is the throne and the battles fought to keep it or to cement its power.
\nThe first single of the album, \u201cTwisting The Knife\u201d, was writen about The Stockholm Bloodbath,
\nwhich was a trial that led to a series of executions in Stockholm between 7 and 9 November
\n1520. The siege of Arkona in 1169, lead by the Danish and Pommeranian forces under Valdemar
\nI is the beginning point for \u201cFall of Arkona\u201d. Finally, a song about strength, valour and courage
\n(\u201cOne Man Army\u201d) complete the singles trilogy of the record.
\nThe \u201cEpitome\u201d album cover is a depiction of the Danish queen Sorte Grethe (Black Greta). In her
\nown time, Margaret had a reputation as a competent and enlightened regent. Regent Margaret
\nwas faced with the unresolved conflict between the crown and the archbishop. The song \u201cSorte
\nGrethe\u201d, on the album, is about a bloody battle where 12.000 men were killed to protect her
\nfamilies\u2019 right to the crown.
\nVanir has been around for more than 10 years and has evolved a lot since the bands beginning.
\nWith the last three records, and now with \u201cEpitome\u201d, Vanir shows its hard edge and catchy
\nmelodic death metal.
\nFrom the Sagas of old, to the halls of kings and the bloody battlefields, Vanir\u2019s music has been
\nput together, without compromise, with a fascination with Scandinavian common origins, and the
\nblood spilled throughout history.<\/p>\n
